The grass verges, even along the busiest roads were in full bloom
with beautiful wild flowers amidst long grasses. I have not seen
such a display for a while.

Some years ago it was policy to cut back grass verges and banks,
and although it looked neat and tidy the survival
of wildflowers and insects which depend on that kind of habitat was
